MACU Student-Athletes Honored with Academic Awards
July 3rd, 2019
OKLAHOMA CITY– The Sooner Athletic Conference has announced its Academic All-Conference and Commissioner's Honor Roll honorees for the 2018-19 season, and the Mid-America Christian University athletic department was well represented across the board.
MACU had a total of 49 athletes honored as Academic All-Conference across eight of the nine sports in which the Evangels competed. The Evangels also had a total of 85 student-athletes included on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
“This has been a banner year in the classroom,” said Athletics Director Marcus Moeller. “I am extremely proud of the hard work of our student-athletes. This is also a result of our coaching staff working very hard to create a culture where academic success is expected and celebrated. We are very fortunate to have an incredible amount of support on our campus from the faculty and staff, so I also want to say a huge ‘thank you!’ to those members of our MACU family who have helped make this happen.”
MACU was at or near the top of several lists for Academic All-Conference. The MACU men's basketball team led all SAC men's hoops squads with seven honorees, the women's hoops squad was second in the SAC with 10 honorees, baseball finished tied for second with a dozen on the list and softball finished tied for third with 11 student-athletes recognized.
To become Academic All-SAC, student-athletes must be sophomores, juniors or seniors who have posted a minimum 3.25 grade-point average during the previous two semesters and are regular letter winners on his or her team.
Women's soccer had a trio of honorees, men's soccer put four on the list, and volleyball and men's golf each had one player recognized.
Each of those eight teams were also represented among the 85 MACU honorees on the Commissioner's Honor Roll. To make the cut for the honor roll, student-athletes must have posted a 3.0 GPA for the previous academic year.
The men's soccer and baseball teams led the way with 16 honorees each. The softball Evangels put 15 student-athletes on the list, women's soccer had 12 honored and women's basketball was also in double figures with 10. Men's basketball posted eight on the Honor Roll, volleyball had seven and men's golf boasted one.
In addition, the MACU women's basketball team posted a high enough team GPA to qualify as an NCCAA Scholar Team, boasting a 3.4 GPA as a team. The NAIA Scholar Team list will be announced later this month.
MACU also had seven baseball players, six softball players and a men's golfer honored as NAIA Scholar-Athletes. To earn NAIA Scholar-Athlete status, an athlete must be a junior or above academically, and they must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5.
In addition to the athletes who qualified as NAIA Scholar-Athletes, the baseball and softball teams had several other athletes honored as NCCAA Scholar-Athletes. The only difference in the requirements for NAIA and NCCAA Scholar-Athlete status is the GPA, which the NCCAA only requires to be a 3.4.
